I want my art to question the definition of beauty - I like to create what first appears beautiful to draw the viewer in, but then starts to unnerve you the longer you look. For me, the greatest challenge is finding the right balance between light and dark, the fantastic and the realistic.
Many of my ideas come from my love of Japanese ghosts and demons, medieval macabre artwork, nature, and more recently Chinese wuxia movies and stories.
It's taken me years to learn how to portray it in my pieces, and I'm still working on refining my overall aesthetic. Kame was the first piece to really capture it - there is nothing particularly grotesque or evil about her - but the longer you look at her, the more and more it feels like she's looking back at you and you're not entirely sure if she's thinking good thoughts!
