Sterling Hundley

Raised in Richmond, Virginia, illustrator and painter Sterling Hundley earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Communication Art and Design from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1998. His work has appeared in Communication Arts, American Illustration, Print, 3 × 3, Graphis, Step by Step Graphics, and in publications of the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, the Society of Publication Designers, and the New York Society of Illustrators. Clients have included Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, The Atlantic, GQ, the New York Times, The New Yorker, the Los Angeles Times, Outside, Major League Baseball, Marvel, Scholastic, HarperCollins, Random House, Inc., Penguin Group (USA) Inc., and Knopf Publishers. Awards for his work include multiple gold and silver medals from the American Museum of Illustration; Society of Illustrators, New York, as well as gold and silver medals from the Illustrators Club of Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia.

In 2013, Hundley was one of eight artists selected for exhibition in the State of the Art: Illustration 100 Years After Howard Pyle Exhibition at the Delaware Art Museum, which served as a cross-section of contemporary illustrators, tracing their legacy back to the "Father of American Illustration". Hundley's work was used as the exhibition catalogue cover, as well as in all of the exhibition advertising.

In 2014, Hundley was commissioned to create 13 full-page illustrations, along with the cover, slipcase and end pages for Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, published by the Folio Society in London, England. A series of seven works from the illustrated edition were selected for the Museum of American Illustration; Society of Illustrators, New York's Annual Competition, as well as being selected for the Short List in the Illustrated Book Category of the Victoria and Albert Museum Illustration Awards in the United Kingdom.

Hundley is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia.

Hundley recently Founded Legendeer, an international, community based initiative focusing on the pursuit of direct experience as the catalyst of the creative process. The group includes world class illustrators, athletes, art directors, painters, writers, animators, poets, photographers, guides, and naturalists who share a common belief in the power of direct experience in shaping story.
