On the Same Side of the Sun, sister painting to Mooning Over You, is based on the Chinese folktale “The Weaver and the Herdsman,” a story of forbidden love. When the daughter of the sky emperor, Zhinü, neglects her duties, spending her hours with her lover, the herdsman of heavenly water buffalos, instead of weaving the sunrises and sunsets, her parents separate them. Divided by a river of silver, the two are allowed only one day of the year to see each other. On the Same Side of the Sun pictures this one day of happiness, representing their forbidden love with morning glories, as their blooms only last for a day before fading. Despite their impossible love, the weaver and herdsman find solace in the one day of the year when reunited, they finally share the same side of the sun.
