9x12 inches, pencil on gessoed board, digital color. Week 1, Month of Fear 2016 Hidden mothers in Victorian photographs are woman “hiding” under dark cloths holding their children as still as possible while the photographer takes a typically long exposure for the era. We “see” the mother under the cloth when we have a surviving photo that was never cropped in tightly on the child. There is a strange uncertainty about some of these photos however. Victorians would also take last photographs holding deceased loved ones, their hands sometimes tied piously into a position of prayer. Looking at these antique unlabelled photos we can’t be entirely sure if we are looking at someone living or dead.
