This was interior art done for the table top RPG " Heroes' Tears" . It' s pretty common for the art direction of Heroes' Tears to be excessively complex. In this case it was a bit over the top, and we actually had to cut elements. The scene needed to show an elf fortress made of living trees, a burned down suspension bridge extending over a mile wide river with gnome shanty towns living on the remaining section, a gnome village beneath the fortress, a market place outside of the fortress, a port for boats coming in off the river, dwarves trading on the opposite shore, and somebody smuggling goods onto the bridge. We eventually decided to avoid the specific character interactions, and zoom out to show the structures.
