The first in a series of mermaids I am making inspired by the seven seas, or at least my take on the " seven seas." I organized them by their size, but next by their location so I got a wide variety of seas across the planet. I am excited to create the mermaids that I feel would fit in that environment. This piece is the Barents Sea located in the Arctic, by the Norwegian waters and Russia. It is thought that the myth of the Kraken or giant sea monster came from roughly this area so I thought it would be perfect to depict her as a warrior mermaid to protect her merpeoples. I was brainstorming " practical" things I thought a mermaid could use underwater, such as discarded shells. A lobster shell could be a vambrace, or a turtle shell a shield. Abalone shoulder plates and seaweed wrappings to give minor protection while keeping mobility. Keeping barnacles could also even give advantageous protections! Lastly, the spiny murex could create a fierce spear. 11 x 15 inches
