&ldquo After a few days the fever left my body and I woke up, but my health never fully recovered. Every so often, out of the blue, I would experience harrowing headaches that no herb or prayer could appease. But this was not all. Sometimes I could detect movement in the corner of my vision Shadows crept along the corners of walls, and pressed into alcoves on the street. Gradually, as time passed, they revealed themselves to me. Like wild animals coming out of hiding. The shadows started to take shape. Some formed into winged beasts with translucent skin like spider webs soaked in dew, whilst others sprouted soft fur. Through the gradual comfort of our proximity I grew to understand their characteristics and eventually learnt to communicate with them. Some chatted like songbirds, whilst others kept quiet and distant nodding and gesturing in lieu of words.&rdquo Grizel Ó Broin&rsquo s story will be featured among those of other wise women in my upcoming A Compendium of Witches, a project supported by my amazing Patreon community
