Projects: Marianne has produced the Illuxcon Costume Salon and Sketch Lab' for three consecutive years at IX and has planned a series of paintings based on her extensive reference photos and thumbnail sketches taken throughout both events.
It' s been nearly 14 years since I last painted the Japanese ' kaiju' (giant monster/being) MOTHRA from the Godzilla canon of cinematic monsters. This version of MOTHRA was created by my friend Shinichi Wakasa (famous spfx suitmaker for the Toho Studios Godzilla films, among others) for the REBIRTH OF MOTHRA movies (three of them) in the late 1990s. While there were several versions that he designed for the series, this one called RAINBOW MOTHRA because of the distinctive coloration, remains my favorite. In the opening scenes of the third movie, Rainbow Mothra is seen racing across the ocean above a group of deliriously racing dolphins. That image has stayed with me a lot of years. I painted an original painting called RAINBOW MOTHRA: RACING WITH THE DOLPHINS in 2000...and that painting hangs in Shinichi' s office at MONSTERS INC (not related to, and also predates the Disney movie of the same name). However, I have grown as an artist since that first Mothra painting and it' s telling in this newer version.
