The Vegetable Man was first seen in Fairmont, West Virginia, in 1968. A man named Jennings Frederick was hunting when he began to hear a strange sound, a high-pitched voice that sounded like a phonograph record running at high speed. He felt something around his arm and thought he was entangled in briars, but he realized he was being held by something; it was a seven-foot-tall creature that resembled a plant. It had him by the arm and communicated to him telepathically, "“YOU NEED NOT FEAR ME. I WISH TO COMMUNICATE. I COME AS A FRIEND. WE KNOW OF YOU ALL. I COME IN PEACE. I WISH MEDICAL ASSISTANCE. I NEED YOUR HELP.” At that instant, the creature plunged its thorn-spiked fingers into Jennings and began draining blood. As it did, its eyes began spinning and it grew more animated. It finally released its grip and bounded off through the brush leaving Jennings drained and dazed.
