This piece first debuted as part of the A.R. Mitchell Museum group show 2024, "Character in Context". The concept of the Fates originates back to ancient Greek mythology, holding many variations throughout history. In one main theme, the three sisters represent birth, life and death, and are in charge of destiny as they measure out the thread of life. Inspired by this I wanted to create my own new idea, using a western stage and symbolizing their essence using elements from nature. I pictured birth in white robes, birds flying out as new life. Life would be like a tree growing out of the dirt, earth tones and reaching skyward. Death would appear haunting but spiritual, the mystery of the beyond with the moon as a halo behind her. All would be adorned with coins and flowers, symbolizing our experiences and memories, threads of life subtly woven throughout.
