Cerynitis, 20” x 13.25”, oil on wood
The Ceryneian hind was a magical doe sacred to Artemis, the virgin goddess of the hunt, the moon, animals and unmarried women. Known also as the Golden hind, the painting has her bedecked in gold, yet a wedding ring is notably absent. The white of her clothing indicates purity and virginity and she is shown against a moonlit background, all in deference to the goddess.
