Based on the Paolo Bacigalupi short story, Moriabes Children, from the anthology, Monstrous Affections. I had read the Bacigalupi novels Ship Breaker and The Windup Girl, so I knew he was a writer with chops, but I still found this story a surprise &mdash a psychological fantasy, dark but poetic, about Alanie, a girl who hears or dreams she hears the voices of the kraken who drowned her father and his crew. The kraken, unseen but ever-present, tauntingly warn her of dangers to come. They&rsquo re not her friends, but not exactly foes either. Eventually, Alanie finds her courage in their wild songs.
