"Merfolk Tunnel-Guide", my second card for Magic's Ixalan: Alchemy, AD Zack Stella. I'm glad I was able to take on the merfolk, whose features seem to be tailor-made for me to have a really good time. But man, did I have a hard time cracking this one -- harder than any card I've done since. I just couldn't seem to figure out the composition, arrange all the elements how I liked, and even now, over a year later, I still have some misgivings. But! I got to stretch my color palette a bit, which had some really fun results. And I think things I learned from this painting about color and light have informed a lot of choices I've made since in really positive ways. Also, ultimately, I'm pleased that the ultimate solution we ended up with involved a lot of my favorite Danny-oid elements, like graphic shapes framing the figure and a little distortion
